Dear Viewer,

You have no future. Everything that was envisioned, projected, speculated, sold, claimed, sent into space, came crashing down with war. Everything in this gallery is real, except for you. You have been compromised, exposed, radiated and excised.

War is not only a tragedy, it is also a duration, an inner state; a state in which all the wars ever fought are internalized. We want to attend to heavy objects as primordial and alchemical elements of the land hoping to escape the unnegotiable disruption…

Paper Planes Intervention

The Always Fresh presents

Nowhere could one find a greater meeting of aesthetics, aspiration, and internationalism than the Venice Biennale - until the day this "world in a garden" fell apart. It began when the Russian pavilion was hacked by its own bots, in what's become known as the Transaction of Botland; then the United States surrendered its pavilion to art made by and for other species; then the very premise of nationhood collapsed, as the Polish Republic of Hungary, Franchised Paris, so many others came into being.

We followed these events without much concern; nations end, tastes change. Our foundation, our steady ground, our safe haven of sanity and tradition: What sated us, when the art sucked, was pizza. As long as we could rely on a slice, we would certainly return to the Biennale.

Alas, even pizza has gone. Always Fresh, cut off from its gas supply, can't keep making this culinary wonder. We are left to imagine a Biennale beyond nations-and to remember the former friendship of crust, tomato, and cheese. Please join us for the first and only Pizza Piennale.

The Always Fresh

The Always Fresh was a pop-up exhibition space operating from March through October 2021 inside a foreclosed pizza shop on New York’s Lower East Side. It aimed to explore, expose, and exploit the misalignments and false expectations of the present moment.

A decade ago it was owned by a local family and rated the best slice in the city. Now it’s a slice of what’s happening in art and critical thought. Always fresh and hot.

The Always Fresh was organized by Lika Volk and presented four exhibitions. The inaugural exhibition brought together nine New York galleries, each presenting one artist, followed by three curatorial projects.
